A captive and informed audience of true crime aficionados on Clubhouse begin to assemble into a virtual room accessible only on handheld devices (e.g. smartphones). They gather beneath the virtual stage of speakers, which include Detective Jack, myself, and our regular co-moderators. After breaking into some banter before settling in for our featured presentation, there is a moment of silence as people wait for the detective to unmute.

Every Thursday at 7:00 PM (PDT) we present a criminal case timeline of a high-profile murder investigation on the drop-in social media app. Everyone on stage and in the audience knows how the story ends, but to hear it chronicled with nuance and context, is what keeps bringing people back.

As new and regular guests continue to fill the gallery, four people in a row, Detective Jack Struble provides a tell-all and unapologetically and unabashedly shares a solved homicide case and a supplemental review after being cued up unceremoniously by me.

The detective sets the stage for the crime with regard to the historical and geographical background before digging into details of the case. He’s taken us back to the 70s, 50s, and once even a century ago before sharing the riveting and often gruesome detail of stories barely fit for Dateline NBC.

In a past episode, we covered the unfolding Gabby Petito murder case, but our focus has been on famed Los Angeles-area homicide investigations, including the likes of the O.J. Simpson case, the Menedez Brothers case, and the Manson family case.

Sharing intricate circumstances surrounding notable crimes, Detective Jack describes the success and failure behind the investigations and examines how some of the most horrific criminals were prosecuted thanks to some good luck and the skill of some very savvy detectives.

I provide a very crude criminal profile, which often encompasses a psychological assessment from a non-clinical, but academic perspective. We reference resources that often speak to antisocial personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder. Our co-moderators provide some ancillary information, which is both evidence-based and supposition, given available information on the case.

As we dive deeper into the depravity and criminality of each homicide, the audience hangs on to every word, eager to discover what motivates the most sociopathic and psychopathic offenders to have ever been born, to have ever perpetrated a crime, and to have ever been captured.

After comprehensively detailing the case, including the search for assailants/suspects, interviews, evidence collection and preservation, and other methods of investigation (e.g. forensics), we break out into a discussion of extenuating circumstances and consider the criminal behavior from the perspective of diverse subject specialties. These include but are not limited to social justice, ethics, and jurisprudence. We also include a review of any postmortem examinations for those courageous enough to stick around. But it is not over. Another 30-minutes to an hour is dedicated to fielding questions from the audience, which may include anyone from anywhere in the world.

We feature cases investigated by Detective Jack here in Los Angeles or cases handled by friends and colleagues or other contacts of our speaker panel. A few months ago, retired LACSD detective Gil Carrillo join us on stage to share how Richard Ramirez (AKA 'The Night Stalker') was apprehended.

Without fail, Detective Jack and our panelists analyze the investigation to better understand the demise of victims and perpetrators alike.
